Gus Hansen experienced an amazing year on the WPT where he was the only player to make it to the closing poker table in three of the tournaments. Gus Hansen has been seen on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You may remember one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history up against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen won a huge pot with 4 of a kind against Negreanu’s full house. Hansen has made many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the best players in the world. While betting on internet poker, a different side of Hansen has emerged. He frequently participates in the 200/400 NL max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus usually buys-in for the minimum of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He sits there waiting for a good hand and then pushes all-in. I believe Hansen is an excellent poker player but not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is broke, he has little or no reason to settle at the game with the minimum buy-in.
Buying in for the min takes most of the ability out of big stack poker. Hansen is accepted to be one of the best players in the world but he cannot buy in for the full dollar value. I think television can skew our view of the real world at times. The best players anywhere in the world could be players you have never heard of before. Gus can be seen wagering on web poker on Full Tilt. He generally competes in high stakes omaha eight-or-better and texas hold’em. Gus Hansen has shown himself as a competition player. Can he back up his skills in money rounds?
