Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha hi-low starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems difficult at first, after a few hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming collection of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high hand, and several shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
