Online Poker – How it it is Different From Traditional Gambling

[ English ]

In recent years web-based poker and particularly the Hold em variant of the casino game has come to dominate our television sets. I am usually asked to comment on the differences in play among web poker and real world rooms which I look to set out in this article.

1. Speed of on line poker play is roughly twice that of brick and mortar poker play. The variety of hands per hour in a land poker site would be circa 30 per hour at best, maybe as low as twenty. Typical internet poker casino game would see 50-60 hands per hour, and anything as much as 120 per hour for short handed "Turbo" play.

Two. Rake collected by an on-line poker room will be 5 per-cent or less of each pot whereas land based rooms will probably be 10 % or even higher. In this regard net wager on is the better value option. Some countries, such as the UK have laws against the taking of rake. Instead they either charge by the hour or by the tournament. This may be the reason that Caribbean Poker is favoured over Hold em in brick and mortar gambling houses in the UK.

3. The high quality of gambler identified in an internet poker site will normally be lower than that in land based rooms. There are many reasons for this except to actually go to a real world smoky area sitting down at a table of 10 takes an element of confidence that you don’t will need in a web poker environment. Traditional gamblers are typically superior in that they usually understand the casino game prior to betting it. By way of contrast your average on-line poker newbie has just watched the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel or ESPN. The only exceptions to this that I’ve observed occur in Las Vegas exactly where you obtain the full assortment of extremes from holiday makers attempting their hand with the best in the world.

Four. Web poker players can pick and opt for the time of day they play as they can wager on twenty-four hrs a day, five days a week and do so from the comfort of their own home. Land based gamblers must plan ahead and acquire to the venue at the due starting time.

Five. Internet poker players have more option, in the range and selection of games to choose from, ranging from no cost bet on to cash games to tournaments of all sizes. If you want to win a seat at the upcoming 2006 WSOP, then you need to be looking towards on line poker tournaments exactly where a far greater assortment of choices await such as satellite entries from as little as $5.

Six. Poker Tells involving on line and real world poker play are really different. Land based players spend far more time observing body language and voice tells via opponent questioning than they do observing time delays among wagers and bet size relative to the possible odds of larger hands. On-line Poker Tells have more to complete with timing, wager size, and table position instead of the judgement of facial expression.

7. Poker etiquette is far more disciplined in brick and mortar poker rooms. The web-based poker experience can often be spoiled by drunken fools who believe they have Phil Ivey’s skill level even though they clearly don’t. Catch a lucky card in an online poker room and you might find your self on the end of a few verbal abuse (through the typed chat system). Phrases such as "you are an idiot" and worse wouldn’t be tolerated in a traditional home except go largely unchecked online. You usually have the option to turn off gambler chat but my preferred betting style is always to goad the offending gambler into playing on tilt (usually a basic thing to do). One recourse you do have against abuse would be to report the player to the pit boss and they will probably be either banned from chat or thrown out of the home altogether.

Eight. Net poker gives you the unique ability to bet on a lot more than one area at a time. Clearly this is not an alternative open to brick and mortar players. I know of people who play up to six tables simultaneously.

As you may see both environments have the prospective for a genuinely great game of poker. Unique experiences to suit diverse player needs. Personally I do not have a preference amongst the two. I worth the convenience of on-line bet on, but still get pleasure from the interaction of a live room.
