Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he played extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he could boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus attention more on poker.
The actual improvement in his game began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would frequently compete against one another. He had access into a few of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his strategic thinking techniques. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL holdem.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best women players the poker world has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
