His grandpa taught Phil penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup whatever he possibly could about the game. He routinely would tell his parents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He did not permit the adverse comments from other people kill his goal of being one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.

Phil started playing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his game at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning experience and winning wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the final table he defeated quite a few of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.

Phil made a decision to take his skills to the successive level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to dedication and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He states that he’s learning every single day and is very humble about his achievements. He knows he makes errors in each session of poker and constantly strives to improve.

Although Ivey has won some large tournaments, he prefers destroying money games on a regular basis.
