Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi/lo starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at first, following a few hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming array of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high, along with several battling for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha/8.
