Omaha Hi/Low: Fundamental Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.

Omaha Hi-Lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants can get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

While it seems complex at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming range of wagering choices and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high hand, along with several trying for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
