Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he liked participating in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he played extensive hours and don’t win most times. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he might boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus more on the game.

The actual advancement in his skills began when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently wager against one another. Howard was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL holdem.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena ever. Howard relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
