Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he enjoyed playing different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he played countless hours and fail to win most times. He earned some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The actual advancement in his skills happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently compete against each other. He was able to access several of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit holdem.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
