Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants often get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same concept in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult at first, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high, as well as many shooting for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha High-Low.
