Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players often get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the identical notion in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an amazing assortment of wagering choices and because you have many players shooting for the high hand, as well as several battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi/lo.
